Rim Locks
A rim latch or a rim lock is another popular kind, mostly installed in apartment complexes. Perfect for auto-locking the door behind you as you enter or leave, it has a latch mounted on one end of the door and a rim cylinder on the other end. The rim cylinder can be standard or customized according to your needs.
Pro-tip: Never rely on a rim lock alone for your main door. They’re not designed to take a lot of force. It’s always better to pair a rim lock with other locks.
Mortise Locks
Although the rim and mortise locks can be grouped together due to certain similarities, they are two different types. And the difference lies in the kind of hardware on which they are used. Whereas rim locks are mounted on both ends of the doors connected by a single piece of metal that runs through the door, the mortise locks are screwed on a specifically-designed mortise hardware which is mounted on the inside of the door. They can have a sprung latch, deadbolt, and a lever handle.
Euro Locks
Also known as European locks or Euro cylinder locks, they’re installed mainly on the UPVC door. Euro locks come in various shapes and sizes and consist of a cylinder connecting the two ends of the lock.
Night Latches
If you step into your house with a bag of groceries in your hands and want to slam the door shut, a night latch might be perfect for you. Perhaps this is why they’re known as ‘slam locks’. The slam lock function secures the door right away.
